More information about Curcumine-SLCP ™ Curcumin is one of the best known and most widely used herbal preparations. Curcumin is the main active ingredient of turmeric, an aromatic spice from the root of the Curcuma longa. Turmeric originates in Indian cuisine, where it is an important part of the famous curry dishes under the names koenjit or yellow root. Traditionally, curcumin is used to support the immune system and to maintain healthy liver function and digestion. In addition, it contributes to the maintenance of supple joints and supports the mental balance and the functioning of the central and peripheral nervous system. Curcumin-SLCP ™: a technological breakthrough The biggest challenge in developing curcumin preparations with optimal efficacy is to overcome the problems with their absorption and bioavailability. Curcumin in an 'unprocessed' form is, after oral intake in the intestine and in the liver, quickly converted into inactive metabolites, such as curcumin-glucuronide, which are quickly excreted by the body again. Verdure Sciences, the manufacturer of Curcumine-SLCP ™ from Vitals, has succeeded in solving these problems after many years of research and collaboration with the University of California (UCLA). By means of their patented technology, they have increased the absorbability of curcumin by 65x and the bioavailability by as much as 285x (compared to standard curcumin preparations consisting of 95% curcumin). This breakthrough has been achieved after testing many different formulations for their bioavailability in humans. The most optimal results were obtained with a formulation that is actually inspired by Indian cuisine, where turmeric is mixed with oily ingredients in the preparation of curry pastes. In their curcumin product with the brand name Longvida® use is made of so-called Solid Lipid Curcumin Particles, where the curcumin is packaged in a fat-like particle consisting of three long-chain fats that also occur in food, namely phosphatidylcholine, stearic acid and ascorbyl palmitate. How is Curcumin-SLCP ™ absorbed in the body? Normally, curcumin is absorbed in the same way as most other nutrients (eg sugars and amino acids). In the intestinal epithelium there is already a first enzymatic conversion of biologically active curcumin into curcumin glucuronide, an inactive metabolite. The curcumin then travels through the portal vein blood to the liver where it is further inactivated and is also excreted again quite quickly. Curcumin-SLCP ™, however, makes use of an alternative route of absorption into the body. Because of the unique way it is surrounded by fats, it is recognized by the body as such and treated in the same way as other long-chain fats in the diet. These are included in the intestinal cells in chylomicrons (transport particles) and transported to the blood circulation via the lymphatic system. These chylomicrons do not initially pass the liver but are transported by blood to the various tissues and organs, where they release their contents under the influence of a fat-splitting enzyme (lipoprotein lipase). The curcumin in the chylomicron is still in the biologically active form, which is also called 'free' curcumin. In this form, it is released from the chylomicron and is absorbed into the tissues and organs where it can exert an effect. Biologically active (free) curcumin itself is a fatty substance and can in this way even cross the blood-brain barrier, in contrast to the inactive metabolites of curcumin, and support the functioning of the central nervous system. Absorption versus bioavailability The inclusion of a particular substance is often discussed. This refers to the maximum blood level (Cmax) that is reached at a specific time after oral intake of a nutrient. The absorption is part of the bioavailability, but certainly does not say everything. A nutrient can be absorbed very well and quickly reach a very high blood level, but then again very quickly broken down and removed from the body without having enough time to be effective. It is important to also look at the development in time as far as the blood level is concerned and not only at the moment when the maximum blood level has been reached. It is about how long the nutrient has been present in the blood in its biologically active form and how long it has had the chance to exert its effect. This says something about bioavailability, which is defined as that part of a nutrient that is absorbed into the body and available for use in certain body processes. Due to the high bioavailability, Curcumin-SLCP ™ can suffice with a low effective dose. And because it is present for a long time as active curcumin in the body, a one-off daily dose is sufficient. This has many advantages for the user-friendliness. Not everyone can tolerate high doses of curcumin well, and it is also easier to only have to take a supplement once a day.
